When you’re writing music, it’s easy to think of a key as something that determines the mood of a song.

Minor feels dark.
Major feels happy.

But music is rarely that simple.

Two songs can be written in the exact same key and tell completely different stories.

One can feel like the beginning of something. Another can feel like the end. One can sound hopeful, another lonely. One can feel cinematic and expansive, while another feels intimate and personal.

Music doesn't always need lyrics to tell a story.

Sometimes a melody, a chord progression, a drum pattern, or even a single sustained note can communicate something that words cannot. Music can create tension before anything happens, make a moment feel nostalgic, or turn an ordinary scene into something unforgettable. The best songs or movie scores evoke some kind of emotion. You know? Like that R&B or pop song that made you cry when no one was watching.  

That is what draws me to composing for storytelling.
